Solar Pool Cover for your Home
It's springtime and many homeowners are starting to think about opening their pools for the season. Did you know that a solar pool cover can allow you to use your pool earlier in the year and use it well into the colder months? If you live in a sunny area, this can be a great way to get more out of your pool, start harnessing the sun's energy, and go green!
How do they work?
These solar pool blanket have two features that allow them to work efficiently. First, they absorb the sun's heat and rays with a network of air pockets. These pockets look a lot like the bubble wrap you use to protect valuables while you're on the go. Air and plastic bubbles absorb heat from the sun and then transfer it to the water through an efficient bottom layer.
The lower layer also performs another function of the cover. This layer acts as a one-way street, allowing heat from the outside in while trapping the heat present in the water. It's made with a space-age, UV-resistant material. This way the heat that is already in your water does not escape.
Can they save me money?
Yes, solar pool covers can save you money. They can do this in two ways. Most importantly, they minimize the use of electricity or gas to heat the water. By trapping heat already in the water and adding heat to the water when the sun shines, the cover reduces the work that existing heaters have to do.
What time of year are they used?
In general, they are used almost any time the sun shines. They do best in climates that experience abundant sunlight, but cool temperatures in the spring and fall. In these climates, cover can extend the swimming season by weeks and even months.
Is it difficult to use them?
These covers roll in and out just like old-fashioned plastic covers. The solar casing is a bit thicker than the older version, so the reel used to roll them may need to be slightly larger. Every other aspect of the cover is the same as a normal pool cover.
