A Comprehensive Guide To Gas Masks

Gas masks are the devices that assist the wearer and protect them from inhaling gas, smoke or other toxic fumes, have been used by different people and for different reasons over the years.

Miners, firefighters, and underwater divers need helmets to protect their faces from the harmful elements, provide air for breathing, and filter out potentially lethal substances such as smoke and debris. It took a number of inventors to develop a useful product to meet this need, leading to the development of gas masks. Prior to 1915, gas masks were made in limited numbers for firefighters, miners, and deep-sea divers. Obviously, a deep-sea diver's helmet has the additional job of keeping water out of the mask, but performs essentially the same function as any other device.

Some masks designed for miners have a similar tube attached to an air tool to allow miners to breathe at depths where coal dust is so thick they would pass out within minutes without wearing a mask.

Masks designed for firefighters are the best of early prototypes of modern gas masks, as instead of providing a supply of fresh air, they pass the existing supply of air through a series of filters designed to remove particles from the air and make them safe for human inhalation. This invention was the most widely produced version and was then mass-produced for the Army in early 1915 with only minor modifications to the filtration system to accommodate the removal of chlorine gas and later mustard gas from the air.
