What Is Gaslighting In A Relationship?

Gaslighting can cause anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems, including addiction and suicidal thoughts.6 Therefore, it is important to recognize when you are experiencing gaslighting. Ask yourself if any of the following statements are true:

You doubt your feelings and your reality: you try to make sure that the treatment you receive is not too bad or that you are too sensitive.

You question your judgments and perceptions: you are afraid to speak up or express your feelings. You've learned that sharing your opinion usually ends up making you feel worse, so stay calm.

You feel vulnerable and insecure: You often feel like you're "walking on eggshells" around your partner, friend, or family member. Also, you feel nervous and lack self-confidence.

You feel alone and helpless: You believe that everyone around you thinks you are "weird," "crazy" or "unstable," as they say that you poisoned yourself. It makes you feel trapped and isolated.

They wonder if you are what they say you are: The person you turn on says words that make you feel wrong, unintelligent, inadequate, or crazy. Sometimes you even find yourself repeating these statements to yourself.

You were disappointed in yourself and what you have become: for example, you felt weak and passive and stronger and more assertive.

You have a feeling of impending doom: You have a feeling that something bad will happen when you are around this person. This can include feeling marginalized without knowing why.

You spend a lot of time apologizing: You feel the need to continually apologize for what you did or who you are. You feel like you're not enough: you feel like you're never "good enough." You try to meet the expectations and demands of others, even if they are unreasonable.
