What is a dermatologist?

A dermatologist is a medical doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the skin, hair, and nails. Dermatologists may also provide cosmetic services, such as laser hair removal, Botox injections, and dermabrasion.

The Symptoms of Skin Cancer

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer, and it usually appears as a small, pinkish bump on the skin.

Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common type of skin cancer.

Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer. It usually begins as a dark spot on the skin that may be black, brown, or tan.

Risk Factors of Skin Cancer

  • Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds
  • Fair skin that burns easily or freckles
  • A family history of skin cancer
  • A personal history of skin cancer
  • Excessive exposure to chemicals such as arsenic and certain hydrocarbons
  • Certain medical conditions that weaken the immune system, such as HIV/AIDS or organ transplantation

Prevention and Treatment Options for Skin Cancer

Most skin cancers can be preventable with proper sun protection. This includes using sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, seeking shade, and wearing protective clothing when outdoors.

If you are diagnosed with skin cancer, the treatment options will depend on the type and stage of cancer. Treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy.
